Working across the expanded fields of painting and sculpture, the two artists propose alternative narratives for how care can be constructed and perceived. Led by a curiosity about who the world is designed and built for, Chloe Beddow creates hand-drawn digital painting made from embodied materials such as leather, wood and velvet to create works that exist between painting and sculpture. In this new body of work, Beddow challenges the relationship between care and desirability, using grandeur and ornamentation to revalue objects associated with disability and access. By adorning her works with visceral fabrics, she employs opulence as a deliberate strategy to disrupt hierarchies of value, insisting that moments of care and accessibility deserve the same attention and reverence as objects traditionally deemed desirable. Leon Scott-Engel approaches painting as a physical object, one that occupies, responds to and reshapes space. For Blind Spot, Scott-Engel turns his attention to the interior anatomy of space. A large grid-like structure spans the gallery ceiling, modelled on a hospital waiting room. Scott-Engel reflects on the design of care within such settings and considers how these structures might be reimagined. The paintings’ leaf motif functions as a quiet symbol for healing, transformation and grief. Referencing cycles of growth and renewal, the motif underscores the emotional and bodily experiences embedded within environments of care. While the grid suggests order and repetition - a format historically associated with stability and control, particularly within mental health contexts - the subtle variation across each panel introduces temporality, movement and atmosphere, creating a space that feels transitional rather than fixed. Blind Spot asks viewers to consider where care is made visible, where it is overlooked, and how it might be reimagined through material, space, and aesthetic value. By foregrounding accessibility, vulnerability, and environment, the exhibition invites a reconsideration of how care is experienced, both personally and collectively, and who it ultimately serves. Leon Scott-Engel: The pipeline, for me, holds an intimate, almost private feeling. It’s a space to gently invite new ideas and directions into the work ahead of the show, giving the viewer a peek behind the curtain at what’s to come, without giving too much away. P: Why have you chosen to present this work in advance of your upcoming exhibition? LS-E: ‘Letting go’ (2024) is a work that holds a deep&nbsp; level of meaning to me, and I have intentionally waited to share it until it felt like the right moment. Painted following the passing of a loved one and in the following stages of grief, this work marked the beginning of what has now become a greater exploration of healing, growth and the interior anatomy of spaces designed for care. P: To what extent does it relate to the work in your upcoming exhibition? LS-E: It was during the immediate processing of my visit to see my grandmother in the hospital, and the following stages of witnessing and experiencing grief, that I began to seriously think about the interior anatomy of the spaces we have designed for care, and how we could make them feel warmer; something I am deeply interested in exploring in my work at the moment, and a central concern within the new work I am presenting in the upcoming show. P: How does this work sit within your overall practice? LS-E: ‘Letting go’ links to my overall practice through it’s softness. Across much of my work I focus on softness, and subsequently care, in different forms. Chloe Beddow: When presented in exhibitions art is often seen at its finishing point. To me, the pipeline helps bridge the gap between the studio and the gallery, the artwork and the artist. It has provided a well-rounded and in-depth introduction that gives the viewer a glimpse into my studio, the processes and materials that I work with, and the concepts that make up my practice. P: Why have you chosen to present this work in advance of your upcoming exhibition? CB: ‘Penumbra’ introduces key themes in my work, both materially and conceptually. Materially I am interested in expanding the parameters of painting. I use all the technical considerations of making a painting - composition, surface treatment and mark making - but without the physical paint. I am fascinated by how mark-making can slow the gaze across a surface, and by how it can be combined with the material associations of the interiors and exteriors we encounter every day to create new meanings and ways of looking. Conceptually this work also introduces the key themes of care, visibility, accessibility, design and the body in space. P: To what extent does it relate to the work in your upcoming exhibition? CB: The image in ‘Penumbra’ was from a photograph I took of my mum wearing elbow length silk gloves whilst sitting in her wheelchair. I was interested in the visual collision of the silk gloves and the wheelchair, both carrying such different associations that are not normally conjoined. It made me think a lot about glamour, elegance, seduction and beauty in relation to functionality, durability and structure. These are all themes that became the foundation of thought for my new body of work. P: How does this work sit within your overall practice? CB: This work explores my long-standing interest in the line between absence and presence, for is anything ever fully absent or are we just not looking for it?&nbsp; ‘Penumbra’ scrutinises the notion of an invisible woman and speaks to how the placement of our gaze and bodies affects our perception. Scott-Engel invites a vulnerability and tenderness into his work whilst undermining conventional ideas surrounding masculinity and arbitrary gender roles. Playing off stereotypes, Scott-Engel borrows the structures of boxing equipment such as sparring pads or kick shields to create canvases that serve a safeguard function. Disregarding the rigidity of traditional painting frames, his canvases bend and shield. In doing so, they soften the physical architecture of the gallery itself. Some behave like bodies, slumped on the floor or wrapped around a wall like a protective arm or a lap to lie on. Occasionally resembling mattresses, Scott-Engel also considers place and the privacy of one’s bed as a site for vulnerability. Presented in the main gallery are paintings morphed into sculpture, the artist’s multi-disciplinary practice sharing a common figuration. His paintings which depict scenes of romance and solitude within softened frames, are contrasted with paintings on wood that are hard and rigid. In the end room hangs a&nbsp; sculpture resembling a boxing bag. Naked and exposed, it is built up with softly painted bruises and inhabits a space on its own. ‘Swole’ (2023) closely resembles a figure beckoning to be held, intensifying the human quality in Scott-Engel’s work. Downstairs is an installation titled ‘Beacons’, made of wax casts of the artist’s own head that blinker ‘SOS’ in morse code. Scott-Engel’s work shifts between content and form, between painting and sculpture. Across his work there is a reciprocal relationship between object and viewer. As equally as the viewer is inclined to hold and protect the objects before it, the work itself has its own protective tendency as it interacts with the space and enfolds the viewer. Reflected in his practice is the process of maturing and an ability to be increasingly generous and forgiving with oneself. For his debut solo exhibition, Scott-Engel endeavours to bring further softness into his work. A central consideration for the artist has been to embrace a tenderness that transcends stereotypes and dissolves any line of defense, making room for a mutual respect between viewer and object. For the first time ‘the Pipeline’, which regularly features one work by an artist in advance of their exhibition, is taking place in an offsite location at 46 Penton St, N1 9QA. Uncover will be exhibited and viewable from the street from 1 June up until the opening of Scott-Engel's solo exhibition at Pipeline on 21 June.&nbsp; It can also be visted by appointment, please contact the gallery to arrange. Scott-Engel’s practice reflects on common associations with masculinity that involve a physical and emotional hardening. In an attempt to combat these displays of power, he invites a softness and generosity to his work in both form and subject. Tender paintings reference romance and self-image that reflect the soft structures they are painted on. By enabling his paintings to be physically activated when in the presence of a viewer, Scott-Engel gives his work a sensitivity to their surroundings and creates a relationship between painting and sculpture, person and object. Disregarding the rigidity of traditional painting frames, Scott-Engel’s process begins with the structure of the painting itself. His curved canvases take on a figuration, bending inward and outward and enveloping the viewer. They coil and shield, like a protective arm or a lap to lie on. Scott-Engel enters his paintings into a three dimensional space by laying them like mattresses on the ground or using them to wrap and bandage corners. In doing so, the paintings soften the very edges of the gallery itself. Uncover is a new work by Scott-Engel in which he further explores the suggestion of a mattress, recalling artists such as Tracey Emin and Sarah Lucas who have previously considered the bed as a place that cradles our most fragile moments. A mattress is an object stained with intimate history, a place where we start our day and return to. It is where we are both alone and together, where we yield a part of our personal space to another and shed any hard exterior. For Scott-Engel, Uncover is the springboard for the works in his upcoming exhibition, a place where the hyper-masculine subsides and gives way to the overall expression in his work. He completed his BA at Glasgow School of Art in 2022 and was awarded the Richard Ford Award and Research Residency at the Museo Del Prado, Madrid. RELEASE Black White Gallery are pleased to present their first show Raising Boys, a group exhibition exploring multiple visions of men’s mental health captured in painting, sculpture, photography and film. The exhibition considers how notions of masculinity during our formative years and adolescence may influence mental health.&nbsp;Raising Boys&nbsp;supports the charity&nbsp;Step Forward, which provides free and confidential services for young people aged 11-25 living in the East London area. ARTISTS INCLUDE: Benjamin Murphy is an artist and writer based in London. Born in West Yorkshire in the late 1980s, he now exhibits globally. Benjamin began his artistic career creating elaborate artworks made entirely out of black electrical tape. His most recent work explores themes of polarity, time, memory, and contrast – often rendered in charcoal&nbsp;on raw canvas. Benjamin is the co-founder and co-director of Delphian Gallery, and an associate lecturer at the University of the Arts London. Zoe Forster lives and works in North West Cumbria, the people and the landscape of the area are imperative to her work. The North West suffers from some of the highest suicide rates in all of the UK, the Merseyside town St Helens having been dubbed England’s ‘Suicide Capital’. Working with 16mm film Zoe creates ‘moving portraits’ that celebrate the those living and working in her rural hometown of Silloth and the surrounding industrial areas. London-based artist Conor Murgatroyd&nbsp;has established himself as one of the UK’s leading emerging artists. Originally from Bradford, he is inspired by his working-class roots, multiculturalism, and the people and places he has encountered since moving to the capital. Conor is known for his colourful and structured paintings with their distinctively British aura. His works bring together relatable characters and banal objects to capture the raw beauty of the everyday. Lou Bennett is a non-binary artist who uses painting to trace a thread of British history from the distant past to the present day. Lou’s work explores autobiography and mental health within shifting historical contexts, exposing layers of identity: personal; regional; national. Glasgow based artist Leon Scott-Engel&nbsp;uses painting, sculpture and video to study the body as a metaphysical entity. His multimedia works evoke visual and spatial representations of memory and nostalgia. In works such as&nbsp;Embrace&nbsp;and&nbsp;Wrestlers, Leon explores masculine archetypes and the performative nature of masculinity. William Harman is a Brtish Filipino painter whose large scale oil paintings draw from his personal history and cultural heritage. William fills his canvases with stiff and awkward characters, including individuals stumbling home from a night out, football teams and disorderly schoolboys. Composed with a painterly crudeness for the viewer to confront and enjoy, William’s paintings navigate the margin between realism and the surreal. Irish artist Peter Doyle’s colourful cinematic paintings have caught the attention of several leading galleries over recent years. The self-taught painter, who lives and works in East London, employs a bold palette to create eye-catching works in acrylic on canvas. Peter’s time spent graffitiing has informed his practice today. He approaches the canvas with authority and speed, working any flaws into the final composition. Paul Majek is a visual artist whose work explores community, identity, and representation - the family being a running theme in his work.&nbsp;An amalgamation of&nbsp;found images, archives, and imagined spaces Paul’s paintings portray figures in familiar blue spaces that evoke feelings of peace and reminiscence. Paul currently studies Fine Art at the Ruskin School of Art in Oxford. Or are they trapped in quiet, their vacant stares look through you to the space beyond.Space to rest in the quiet.The doppelgänger glows dim, fading.There's comfort in their absence. With the continuation of the rings for some time you step aside and watch.’ — From Cirkel by Amanda Seibaek Figures in Motion is a collection of works made in the seemingly constant motion of a post-pandemic-art-school, and captures the aspirations of seven artists on the point of entering an art world which is uncertain and exciting. As Amanda Seibaek writes in her poem Cirkel, ‘all I have ever done is living in constant motion.’ The desire to capture something which is temporary and fast moving is something photographer Eadweard Muybridge was doing when he published The Human Figure in Motion in 1879, in which people running, fighting or jumping were photographed against gridded backgrounds, with the intention that the workings of the body could be studied and enjoyed. Just like how a parent might want to take photos of their children or celebrate their first day at school, life is full of moments where we are rewarded if we stop and look at how quickly berthing is moving around us, how much we might have grown.
